Health Promoting School

What is a Health Promoting School?

“A Health Promoting School (HPS) is defined by the World Health Organization as “a school that constantly strengthens its capacity as a healthy setting for living, learning and working” (WHO 1998).

In a HPS, health is viewed in its broadest sense and includes the physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of health.” (Health Promoting Schools, Information for Schools, HSE)

We have a Health Promoting School Committee set up which has representatives from pupils, parents and staff in our school and we are looking forward to working together on this initiative in a whole – school approach to health and well-being.

We are very excited about this new venture in St Oliver’s.

In today’s society there are many issues which will affect the children as they grow up. Many of these issues include childhood obesity, an increasing sedentary lifestyle and mental health issues including anxiety. As a school community, it is our belief that undertaking the Health Promoting Schools initiative, these issues can be addressed.

We feel that all areas of health and well-being are so important to our school community.  We want to provide a safe and happy environment where all children can blossom. We endeavour to encourage healthy lifestyles to promote health for the present and future in St. Oliver’s N.S.

There are many online resources with helpful advice and tips for encouraging a healthy lifestyle. Some of the websites provide publications to download or order. Below are some useful websites:
